A recent study brought out a startling revelation that almost one-fifth Britons do not change their used bed-sheets even once a month. This unhygienic condition is understood to be the cause for a host of health problems including asthma, rhinitis and eczema.
The survey conducted in UK involving more than 2,000 people found that more than half of them sleep on dirty bed-sheets. They said that women in UK were more lax when it came to bedroom-hygiene. Researchers found that only two in five Britons changed their bed-sheets on a weekly basis which is in sync with the talks on hygiene given by ‘cleaning gurus’ on television, Kim and Aggie.
Another 36 percent of all Britons change their sheets on a fortnightly basis while 17 percent admitted to changing their soiled sheets only once a month or even less frequently than that.
Worse still, one percent Britons admitted to changing their sheets just once a year and three percent had no idea about how often they changed them. On the other hand, six percent of people who were house-proud changed their sheets more often than once a week.
It was also a surprise to see almost 40 percent men managing to change the sheets on a weekly basis while eight percent men changed sheets more often than that.
Dr Adam Fox, Pediatric Allergist at a leading London Teaching Hospital said that we spend almost one-third of our lives asleep. This is reflected by the debris which we leave on the sheets. While our bodies shed millions of dead skin-cells every day, we rub off most of these on the sheets during our sleep. Our bodies also secrete fluids, oils and sweat during a long night’s sleep which also gets deposited on the bed-sheets.
He warned that use of dirty sheets could be a leading cause for a number of health and skin problemsfaced by Britons.
