Researchers have observed that only less than one percent women who tried aborting their pregnancy using medication at abortion provider centers like, ‘Planned Parenthood’, New York; either suffered a failure, or endured serious side effects.
Researchers found that abortion related complications which required emergency medical attention or blood transfusion was one in 625 in the period 2009 to 2010.
James Trussell from Princeton University, New Jersey who worked on the study said that medical abortion at Planned Parenthood is safe. He further added that while abortions may not work out positively at all times, the worst outcome is continued pregnancy.
The findings came from the analysis of data collected from about 317 Planned parenthood Centers wherein abortions were performed on 233,805 first-trimester patients using drugs like mifepristone and misoprostol.
According to the findings only one in 200 cases failed even after attempting twice with medication and the pregnancy continued. Eight women had an ectopic pregnancy every year, while one died from associated complications. During the study, approximately 385 women suffered serious side effects and 238 women sought ER treatment. 135 women got admitted to hospitals while 114 underwent blood transfusion and 57 women required antibiotic administration through an IV.
All these women survived proving that medical abortion is safe for women wanting to terminate their pregnancy. Surgical option for abortion is also as safe as medication-induced abortion. The only limitation of the study was that patients did not come for follow-up check-ups which mean that any complication developing in the future could not be recorded or reported.
However, Trussell said, the fact that they did not come for a follow-up meant that they were doing fine. The medication regime used by abortion providers like Planned Parenthood differs slightly from that prescribed by FDA since it uses lower dosages of the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. Some states have made it compulsory to follow the regime given by FDA. Trusslles disagreed with it since there is no proof that the FDA stipulated regime is safer, rather it is more expensive.
